PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The  Westport PAL Lacrosse Program facilitates the long-term development of the skills necesarry for our lacrosse players to become great competitors, teammates and young adults. The curriculum has been developed in coordination with Will Koshansky and his Staples High School varsity coaching staff and is made up clinics, house leagues and travel teams for all skill levels. This coordination will foster a continuity of approach to skill development and game play from an early age through a player’s high school years.

The program is structured in the following way:

SPRING SEASON

Grade K & 1 – Mini-Wreckers Clinic

The ultimate goal of the Mini-Wreckers' program is to establish an early love and enthusiasm for lacrosse that will serve our youngest players for years to come. To facilitate this goal Mini-Wreckers will progress through 3 main stages over the course of the season - Stage 1: Intro to Lacrosse (sticks only); Stage 2: Full Equipment Play; Stage 3: Game Time - all of which culminates at the end of the year with the “Pound at the Sound” jamboree typically scheduled on the first weekend of June for 1st grade players ONLY.

Practices will be in clinic format and held once a week on Saturdays and will focus on lacrosse fundamentals with an emphasis on general athleticism, participation, sportsmanship and fun.

Jerseys and a Warrior Warp Next beginners stick will be provided to all participants. Learn more about the Warrior Warp Next stick here.

The Mini-Wreckers House League introduces our 2nd grade players to structured game-play experience in addition to a weekly clinic format. Clinics will be on Tuesdays with House League games every Sunday. Game format will be heavily informed by U.S. Lacrosse U8 competition structure that consists of a 4v4 format with mini-goals on a size appropriate field (goalies may be added as season progresses). The teams will be evenly balanced and selected after the first full week of practice.

At the end of the season the boys will participate in the Pound On The Sound 7v7 Jamboree in Norwalk against other local programs which is typically scheduled on the first weekend of June.

Grades 5 - 8 - Travel Teams

Grades 5-8 operate under a travel team format based on the following age segmentation - U11, U12, U13 and U14. The player segmentations rules will apply to all boys in Grades 5-8.  Please review the player segmentation rules found here on our site that have been established by US Lacrosse and implemented by the Connecticut New York Youth Lacrosse Association (CONNY).

Travel team placement for all age-groups will be based upon the “3 A’s” – Attitude, Aptitude and Attendance. The goal is to keep rosters to 16-23 players per team to ensure balance playing time for the entire roster while meeting level of competition throughout a given season.

Travel Team Playing Time:

Blue & White Teams: We ask that players on the Blue and White teams prioritize Lacrosse during the Spring.  Repeated unexcused absence may result in decreased playing time or a player being moved to the Gray team.  Excused absences include: health, family, school and religious obligations. A player/parent must directly inform the coach and/or team manager prior to a practice or game when a conflict arises.

Gray Teams: The Gray team will be more lenient than the Blue and White teams.  Players unable to commit to make a 100% commitment to Lacrosse in the Spring should opt to play on this team.  The team will play a full slate of game.

Depending on the number of players, we may field one or more teams consisting of two grade levels; 5th and 6th graders would be combined; 7th and 8th graders would be combined. Combined teams will participate at the White and Grey team levels, depending on the overall team’s skill level.
